Jerusalem: Ir David and The Old City of Jerusalem
“If I forget thee, O Jerusalem”
We remember Jerusalem at every Jewish wedding and in all our prayers. Jerusalem, the city holy to all religions, and especially for the Jewish People.
Private Jerusalem Tour
Our private tour of Jerusalem visits the most important sites of ancient Jerusalem, the City of David, Ir David, and Mount Zion. We enter the Old City through the Jaffa Gate, the historic gate through which most pilgrims entered to Jerusalem from the west.
Next to the Jaffa Gate is a fortress known as Migdal David, The Tower of David, housing the Museum of the History of Jerusalem, deserves a visit. We will continue to the Jewish Quarter and get to know a number of ancient and modern sites: through the picturesque alleys of the quarter, past the birthplace of Rabbi Isaac Luria (Ha’ARI Hakadosh, the father of contemporary kabbala), later the home of the Rabbi Chaim ben Attar (The Ohr Hachayim) and presently The Old Yishuv Court Museum), and down to the Cardo, the heart of the Roman city; we will continue to the Hurva Square where you can hear all about the historic synagogues of Jerusalem’s Old City: the Ramban Synagogue, the Yeshivat Mekubalim, and Horvat Rabbi Yehuda Hachasid, the most magnificent synagogue in Jerusalem, which was destroyed twice and built a third time.
You will be able to see the remains of King Hezekiah’s wall, today in the center of the Jewish Quarter, but in the past it was the outside wall of ancient Jerusalem. From here we shall continue and then look out towards Har Habayit, the Temple Mount.
We highly recommend visiting unique sites such as The Temple Institute which reconstructs the tools used in our Holy Temple and the activities performed therein, and the Herodian Quarter and the Burnt House which have reconstructed life in Jerusalem before the destruction of the Temple.
The City of David is where King David established the eternal capital of Israel and the Jewish People. At the excavations in the City of David, one can see the remains of the Jebusite city, stand in King David’s palace, and walk through water tunnels dug during King Hezekiah’s reign. The City of David tells Jerusalem’s secrets from before biblical times, throughout Jewish history until her destruction by the Romans. After touring David’s City and watching an impressive presentation, the tour will go up to the Kotel Hamaaravi – The Western Wall.
The Western Wall, Wailing Wall, Kosel or simply the Kotel
The Western Wall is only a small piece of the wall surrounding Har Habayit, The Temple Mount. For a long time, this was the only site near Har Habayit where Jews were allowed to pray and, over the course of time, has become considered a holy place, perhaps the most impressive remnant from our Temples remaining today.
One can also visit the three-dimensional model of the temple and the Southern Wall excavations.
After adding our prayers to those of the rest of the Jewish People at the Kotel, praying for the coming of the messiah and the building of our holy Temple, our tour can continue to King David’s Tomb on Mount Zion. Our meeting with King David, composer of the Psalms, will end at the plaza in front of Jaffa Gate.
Those who have less time to see Jerusalem can combine this tour with sites from our tour of modern Jerusalem, “Ir shechubra la yachdav – Jerusalem, built as a city should be, solidly joined together”.
